The Outside Adventure Film School is unlike any other film school experience. We leave the classrooms behind to teach the art of storytelling, cinematography and editing in the world's most adventurous locations. Since the school’s inception on Mt. Kilimanjaro in 2007, founder and three-time National Emmy Award Winner, Michael Brown, has led courses worldwide. Students have created award-winning films in South America, Asia and Africa, as well as across the United States.
It is our mission to give personalized and comprehensive instruction to help students develop their filmmaking skills, whether for a new hobby or to jumpstart a career in adventure film. As creators of such critically acclaimed projects as Farther than the Eye Can See and routine collaborators with National Geographic and Discovery Channel, our impassioned instructors feel right at home sharing their expertise in the ultimate hands-on environments.
"At the end of the school, every student emerges with a solid short film and the tools necessary to take their filmmaking to whichever horizon they seek. That's untouchable." --- Karen Malmqvist
The adventure aspect of each course varies due to location and activities (see past schools), but instruction always covers every stage of the filmmaking process, from story development and shooting to editing and distribution. The Outside Adventure Film School culminates in a student film festival to share the inspirational stories of our students with the community and local film industries, as well as to provide well-deserved recognition to the filmmakers themselves.
All ages and levels of filmmakers are welcome - past students have ranged from 15 to 65 years old - and while some are just learning to wrangle their cameras into record mode, others boast full-time careers producing films and shows for television.
