Why the backcountry?
The Colorado High Country in the heart of winter is a sublime environment and a perfect place for making adventure films. How do you keep your fingers warm and your camera running in these conditions? The High Country is full of surprises, it can be pleasantly warm in the sun, brutally cold and windy or just snowing like it will never end. Really one of the most beautiful places on the planet. I can be as intimidating as it can be fun.

Exciting aspects of this adventure:
- Camp in the snow for a night. We set up tents in a spectacular snowy meadow at 11,000 ft. You might be surprised how comfortable the snow can be if you have the right skills and equipment.
- Two nights in the rustic Janet's Cabin - it even has a sauna.
- Classes beyond filmmaking (great subjects for films)
- Avalanche Safety Instruction with guide Tim Brown. Tim worked with us last year as well, we originally met him on the Matterhorn in Switzerland.
- Snow meteorology with Colorado Powder Forecast Creator Joel Gratz
- Backcountry skills with NOLS instructor Phil Henderson. With 15 years of experience leading groups, skiing, and scaling peaks, Phil knows the equipment we will be using and will add a unique mix to the school.

If you are concerned about your skiing ability or the equipment
required - don't worry - members of the group will be on snow shoes
and our friends at Bent Gate Mountaineering have all the gear you need
to be warm, capable and comfortable. This is all about gaining the
skill and confidence to get out into the winter wonderland of
Colorado, an experience you will never forget.
What will you film?
Everything from in-depth character stories and stunning landscape sequences to breathtaking powder skiing shots—you decide!
Past student films have covered topics ranging from the dangers of avalanche country (Descending Into Darkness), to classic good vs. evil comedies (Welcome to the Backcountry), to the effects of altitude sickness (No Summit For You).
What will you learn?
From the beginning of the adventure film experience, film school students are immersed in the adventure filmmaking process. Our expert instructors will let you in on the tricks of the trade while you develop your film from pre-production (when you’ll learn how to create a compelling story while planning for your expedition), to production (when you film your thrilling adventure), to post-production (when you edit your film and screen before a live audience). This year, music by the Boxcar Daisies and many other sponsoring musicians will be available to student filmmakers.
After this experience you will have the skills and confidence to make more films, enter them to festivals, post them to the Internet or even start a career in film. Some of our student films have won awards and have appeared on national television. Many students have started successful careers in the industry.
