Why Mt. Everest?
Trek to over 18,000 - ft for spectacular views of the Himalaya with four time Mount Everest summiter Michael Brown as your host. Michael was a teammate of blind climber Erik Weihenmayer on his historic ascent in 2001 and is currently co-directing the 3D IMAX movie Return to Everest. Michael has been to the summit four times from two different sides of the peak.
Though we are not aiming for the summit, we will reach great heights on our nine-day trek to basecamp. After flying into Lukla and landing on a mountainside airstrip, we venture from 9,000 feet up to the basecamp at 17,500 feet. For those feeling good and acclimatized we will also head to over 18,000-ft and the summit of Kalla Patthar for a spectacular view of Everest.
We will return to Namche Bazaar via the spectacular trail through Phortse. With the help of the University of Montana Architecture School the Alex Lowe Charitable Foundation and the Khumbu Climbing School are building a new school room in Phortse.
Phortse is the location of Serac Adventure Films award winning documentary The Endless Knot. We will be trekking through the same spectacular mountain views along the way.
Expedition logistics are provided by friend Jeff Evans and his
company, Mountain Vision.
In Early June you will travel to Vail, Colorado and the spectacular Antlers Hotel (great sponsor/off season room rates) to edit your film on Final Cut Pro software. What better way to share this once-in-a-lifetime journey to Mount Everest!?
What will you film?
During this adventure, students will film everything from stunning landscape sequences and cultural studies to in-depth character stories and behind the scenes spoofs. While learning skills to become a filmmaker you will be immersed in the beauty of the Everest region.
What will you learn?
From the beginning of the adventure film experiences, film school students are immersed in the adventure filmmaking process. Our expert instructors will let you in on the tricks of the trade while you develop your film from pre-production (when you’ll learn how to create a compelling story while planning for your expedition), to production (when you film your thrilling adventure), to post-production (when you edit your film and screen before a live audience).
After this experience you will have the skills and confidence to make more films, enter them to festivals, post them to the Internet or even start a career in film. Some of our student films have won awards and have appeared on national television. Many students have started successful careers in the industry.
