"Adventure Film School is not a walk in the park. I was unprepared for
the amount of hard work I would be asked to do during my week in
Colorado-- you're not just a student, but you're responsible for
producing content in a timely manner while learning the process from
pre-production to post-production. Most days left me completely wiped
out with downtime spent on preparing my gear and pack for the next day
out in the elements. About those elements-- we encountered everything
from ice storms at 9,000 foot elevations to afternoon scorchers that
left you with first degree burns and encapsulated in a layer of
dust.
Am I complaining? No-- those probably go down as the best 15 hour days
in my adult life, because I learned to make a film. No amount of
logging credit hours and discussing Ingmar Bergman as a film major
will prepare you for thinking on your feet and solving problems out in
the field.
If I had to leave a tip for future film students-- take top-notch care
of your body first-- thirst, hunger or dressing poorly for the weather
can take its toll on your film. There's a reason why Ryan Ross and
Michael Brown are the go-to guys to film everything from climbers
scaling Everest to spring tornado outbreaks in the Midwest-- they know
what they're doing, and they'll offer you the kind of instruction that
prepares any student to go out surviving and capturing the elements." --- Carole Snow
Gears + Levers
Bicycles are scary! Bicycles are great! Maybe it depends on who you ask. Filmmakers Monika Bunting and Carole Snow take up opposite sides of the issue and learn a little about themselves and each other in the process.
